Campsie Fells Weather Station

A few years back I noticed from a distance this giant golf-ball structure on top of The Campsies. It's quite shy and retiring and is only visible from certain angles due to the folds of the hills but it can be picked out easily from mountains further afield (Ben Lomond, The Luss Hills). Oddly it didn't appear on any maps or aerial photos at that time so my curiosity was piqued. I suspected it was some sort of radar to do with Glasgow airport. Some sources now say it is a weather station.
Niall & I took a wander up there yesterday evening in glorious conditions not far from the solstice.  It makes a cool, humming noise close-up, like a space-ship. It will look great in night photos this winter... smile emoticon
On the distant horizon Ben Lomond's summit can be seen sticking up above the surrounding moorland to the left of the structure with Ben Ime and The Arrochar Alps stretching out further left. And to the right the big hill is Ben Ledi with Ben Vane to the left of it.
The views from the top were extensive: from the Arran hills to the Arrochar Alps, the Munros around Crianlarich & Tyndrum, the Ochils in the East with the Lomonds of Fife, The Forth and the Pentlands.

We heard some strange bird sounds that were probably snipe:

The bog cotton was impressive and gorgeous fluttering in the light breeze.

We did get talking about noctilucent clouds although we didn't see any. Here is my photo of some from 2yrs ago (with associated information about NCLs)
